Patarra has a degree in biology (specialization in biotechnology) by University of Azores (UAc) and a Masters in Marine Resources (with specialization in Marine Biology) by Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas de Abel Salazar, University of Porto. She is an expert in seaweed cultivation with a PhD in Biology by the UAc with the project “Opportunities for Seaweed Aquaculture Development in the Azores” (Ref.ª M3.1.2/F/024/2011, DRCT), developed under the supervision of Drs Ana I. Neto (cE3c, Azores University), Alejandro H. Buschmann (Centro i~mar & CeBiB, Universidad de Los Lagos, Chile) and Helena Abreu (Alga+, Ílhavo). Since February 2018 Rita is working at Expolab – Ciência Viva Science Centre with a Sci&Tech Management Fellowship (funded by FCT).

Rita F. Patarra’s has over 14 years work experience in different areas such as seaweed cultivation and nutrition, phycology, ecological quality of coastal waters, industrial property, R&D project management, food quality control and science communication.
